This Newton home had an aging retaining wall that was on the verge of collapse. The original timber wall was built without a proper foundation or drainage. These omissions led to its premature deterioration. A new timber wall was put in its place, with a proper foundation, drainage, and more tie-backs. The new wall will survive for about 30 years.
Without a proper foundation any large retaining wall can sink and shift. Drainage behind the wall is necessary to dissipate hydrostatic pressure, which can push out a retaining wall. Tie-back anchor timber retaining wall to the earth, more tie-back means that the wall is less likely to move.
