Leveling a Concord backyard

Leveling a Concord backyard

This home’s backyard consisted of a beautiful stone patio, but no other useable backyard space. The backyard was severely sloped, and did not yield any place for a playground for their three children.

The yard was tilled, leveled, and top-dressed with compost before seeding a new lawn. In the play area  4 inches of playground certified wood chips were laid down. These chips ensure a soft area where the children will be playing. While 6 inches is usually the amount called for in a commercial playground space, the client agreed to 4″ to save some money.
During excavation of the slope a number of large rocks were discovered, most likely from an old foundation of a home or other outdoor structure. A concrete walkway and a trash dumping area were also found. The trash and concrete were removed from the property, while the remaining rock was used to build an ornamental retaining wall next to the lawn area, giving a visual transition to the new area.
